In fact, the former Wilderness National Park and Tsitsikamma National Park represent one enormous area. This region (Garden Route) spans the Western and Eastern Cape for fifty miles (80 kilometers) and is a protected reserve.
Tsitsikamma roughly translated means “area of many waters”. Within this park one will find Nature’s Valley. This area contains all kinds of trails, along with lovely beaches and hills. One can sail or canoe from the lagoon area or simply take a walk on the beach.
Hikers come from all over the world to experience the famous five day trail called Otter Trail. It will take five days to travel the trail and one will experience scenery and sights that are too magnificent or put into words. You will traverse beaches, mountains along the coast, and forested area.
Along the trail are special huts where you can spend the night. However, this is a very popular trail so it is recommended to book your hut as far in advance as possible. Otherwise, you may end up disappointed. All the while you will not be far from the coast. One will encounter a wide variety of flora and vegetation on this amazing journey.
If you visit Tsitsikamma you will never forget the sights. Stand above rocky cliffs and feel and experience the pounding waves as they crash into the jagged rocks below. You may wish to dine out in a restaurant that provides an amazing view of the shoreline. Stay in cabins that face the beach or forest huts, if you like. This is a favored spot along the Garden Route.
When you wish to get out and hike and explore you will find a number of short hikes without any fees. Mountain Trail will take you from the restaurant all the way to the famous suspension bridge. The hike is about one kilometer (. 6 miles) long.
Once you walk past the suspension bridge you will find Viewpoint Trail. It is best to have hiking boots as part of this trail is fairly steep. You will see an excellent view of the ocean from here, and it is about two kilometers (1.2 miles) in length.
When you want some great views of the ocean, consider Loerie Trail. It begins a ways from the restaurant and takes you in a one and one half kilometer (nearly one mile) circle. Blue Duiker Trail is also circular and you can get to it from Loerie Trail. It is much longer at five and one half kilometers (about 3.5 miles).
Many people come to Tsitsikamma National Park on their South Africa holidays. One can receive complete tranquility and commune with nature at its finest. Some roads in the area are very rough, so it is a good idea to use a four wheel drive vehicle when traveling the roads. This is especially important if you are unfamiliar with them.
Perhaps one of the most awe inspiring sites in the region is the “Big Tree”. The centuries old wonder is an amazing sight to behold. This yellowwood tree is estimated to be at least six hundred years old and all yellowwoods are now protected from the logging industry. The entire surrounding area inspires a peace and solitude that is difficult to find in today’s modern world.
